For the betterment of our local communities, we have meticulously devised a comprehensive curriculum aimed at inspiring and empowering our youth. This curriculum is tailored to encompass all pertinent facets of Eritrean-American life. At the Eritrean Community Center of the Bay Area, we extend these classes at no cost, considering them a valuable service to both our community and our neighbors.
Entitled the Cultural Literacy and Education Program (CLEP), our initiative covers a wide range of topics, including language, academic and career guidance, historical insights, and cultural enrichment. These offerings are designed to engage the young populace in our vicinity. Our programs not only connect young Eritrean Americans with their cultural roots but also educate them about the intricate history of Eritrea and its diaspora.
The CLEP classes take place every Saturday, and new students are welcome to join throughout the year due to our rolling entry policy. Each student is expected to participate in the entire three-hour program, and the schedule is as follows:
- 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM: Language class (Arabic and/or Tigrinya)
- 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Cultural Identity and Skills Transfer (offered in 4-week cycles), Academic and Professional Support Services, and History Series.
- 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM: Special Programs, which may include film screenings, field trips, and workshops on nutrition and health.
We recognize the importance of accommodating the needs of recent Eritrean arrivals within our community. In line with this, we provide valuable support services, including English as a second language courses, immediately following the CLEP classes. These English courses are offered from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM every Saturday, providing newcomers and community members alike with an opportunity to enhance their English language skills.
