About us

The San Francisco Bay Area, with a special focus on the vibrant city of Oakland, proudly hosts one of the most established and sizable Eritrean-American communities in the United States. This community’s roots can be traced back to the late 1970s when some of its earliest members migrated to the Oakland region in pursuit of higher education. However, it was during the tumultuous 1980s, marked by the intensification of the struggle for Eritrea’s independence, that our community experienced a significant influx of new arrivals.

The Eritrean Community Center (ECC) of the Bay Area stands as one of the United States’ oldest Eritrean community centers. Its rich history traces back to the late 1980s when young Eritrean immigrants arrived, not merely seeking the comforts of their distant homeland but also with a mission to raise awareness about the self-determination struggle of their people.

Over the past two decades, the Eritrean community in Oakland has grown substantially, both in terms of its numbers and its unique needs. Although the Bay Area is estimated to be home to approximately 10,000 Eritrean-American residents, a considerable portion of this population resides right here in Oakland.

The ECC in Oakland is committed to addressing the challenges faced by Eritreans in the Bay Area. It offers support to overcome various cultural, linguistic, and institutional barriers, facilitating the integration of its members into American society. Moreover, it serves as a hub for members to collaborate, working collectively to identify solutions to the issues they encounter in the United States while simultaneously engaging with matters impacting their country of origin.
